ITA Award Winners

PHILADELPHIA - The postseason accolades just continue to roll in for women's tennis freshman Sol Eskenazi. Eskenazi, who was also a first-team All-Ivy player in both singles and doubles, was recently named the ITA Northeast Region Rookie of the Year. Earlier this month Eskenazi was also awarded the Ivy League Rookie of the Year.

As soon as she began competing for Penn, Eskenazi immediately made her impact felt. In her first tournament of the fall, she won the Columbia Invitational Flight A singles draw with three straight-set wins. She also advanced to the semifinals of the Cissie Leary Invitational and entered the ITA Regional Draw as a seeded player. In doubles during the fall, Eskenazi played alongside Jaime Yapp-Shing and the duo won both the Columbia and Cissie Leary Invitational draws, qualifying for the ITA Regional draw.

In the spring, Eskenazi picked up right where she left off, assuming the No. 1 position in the lineup for Penn and winning her first three matches before being forced to retire from her fourth match in which she was in a first-set tiebreak with the 28th-ranked player in the country at the time. When she returned, the freshman reeled off five straight wins in a stretch that saw her win nine of her last 11 singles matches, including a 5-2 mark in Ivy League play. In doubles, she teamed up with Jules Rodin for all but one match and finished with an 11-4 mark during the spring. Penn's top doubles team went a combined 3-1 against nationally-ranked pairings.

Overall, Eskenazi finished her first season at Penn with a 19-5 overall record in singles and an 18-5 record in doubles for a combined total of 37 wins against just 10 losses this season. She is part of young team that looks to return six of its seven players that comprised the Penn lineup during the spring season.
