NEW YORK, N.Y. - The fall portion of the 2012-13 women's tennis season began in the Big Apple for Penn over the weekend, with the Quakers participating in the Columbia Invitational. The Red and Blue's tournament was highlighted by the doubles dup of Alex Ion and Jaime Yapp-Shing, with the pari winning three times to advance to the final of the B Flight.
Though the tournament ended with an 8-3 loss to Columbia's team of Kovacevic and Vaidya -- the number one seed -- the Quaker pair put forth three solid efforts to reach the championship match. Seeded third, Ion and Yapp-Shing survived a challenging opener, defeating Fordham's Ali and Genkina, 9-7. After cruising past Massachusetts' Comas and Francis, 8-2, their trip to the title contest was sealed with a win in a tiebreaker over the No. 2 seed from Harvard, He and Kong, 9-8 (7-3).
