Ivy League Release

PHILADELPHIA - For the second straight year the University of Pennsylvania women's basketball team was picked to place in the top half of the Ivy League. The Quakers were predicted to finish fourth in the 2012-13 Ivy Preseason Media Poll released Wednesday. The preseason poll features a select panel of 17 Ivy media representatives.

Penn earned 76 points in the poll - eight more than last year. Princeton, the three-time defending Ivy League champion, was picked to finish first with 13 of the 17 first-place votes and 132 points. The Tigers were followed by Harvard, which received the other four first-place votes and 120 points. The Quakers were picked behind Yale's 96 points, but ahead of Brown (61), Cornell (58), Dartmouth (46) and Cornell (23).

The Quakers return 10 letterwinners from a season ago and bring in three new members in the Class of 2016 - a well-decorated trio featuring two guards in Keiera Ray and Rayne Connell, while Brooklyn Juday has the potential to play at both the forward and guard position. The Quakers lost two senior starters to graduation last year, but return leading scorer Alyssa Baron and Big 5 Rookie of the Year Kara Bonenberger.

Prior to last season, when the Quakers were also picked fourth, the last time Penn was picked to finish in the top half of the Ivy League was in 2004-05 when the Red and Blue were defending Ivy League champions. The Quakers were predicted to place third and finished fourth with an 8-6 Ivy record. Just two years ago, Penn was picked to finish last, but has improved its win total each season under fourth-year head coach Mike McLaughlin.

The Quakers will begin their 2012-13 campaign on Friday, Nov. 9 at Norfolk State. Tip off is at 6 p.m. The schedule is also highlighted by a Holiday Tournament at Iowa State, a member of the Big 12, and the home opener against Virginia, a member of the ACC (Monday, Nov. 12, 7 p.m.).
