WASHINGTON, D.C. – The No. 9 Penn men’s squash team finished up its first two matches of the season, Saturday in Washington, D.C. against No. 16 George Washington and No. 15 Bates. The Quakers split the doubleheader, taking the first match 5-4 against the Bobcats, then losing the second 4-5 to the Colonials.

Penn (1-1) began with Bates (1-1) at 2 p.m. in what would be the better of the two close matches for Penn on the day. With the Bobcats coming off a huge victory earlier in the day against George Washington, the Quakers had their hands full, but ultimately bested Bates for their first win of the season.

In its second match of the day, Penn faced the host, George Washington (3-1). The Quakers would lose this one, 4-5. The Red and Blue had a 4-3 lead at one point, but were unable to hold on as they lost the No. 1 and 4 matches to seal the loss.

"The George Washington men's team believed they could win and they executed their game plan better than we did," said Jack Wyant, head coach of Penn men's and women's squash. "On the whole they were the aggressors and we were reacting."

Next for Penn will be a short trip down 33rd street for a matchup with Drexel at the Kline and Specter Squash Courts on Nov. 28 at 7 p.m.
