NEW HAVEN, CONN. – No. 12 Penn (4-8, 1-4 Ivy) came up just short on Sunday in New Haven, Conn., falling 6-3 to fourth-ranked Yale (9-2, 3-1). The Quakers earned their first Ivy League win of the season on Saturday over Brown, but were unable to get the weekend sweep Sunday despite winning a match in every rotation.

Penn fell behind, 2-1, early after the first rotation, and was never able to fully surmount that deficit. At No. 6, Jack Maine (5-7, 1-4) fell in straight games, putting the Quakers down one. Justin Ang (2-3, 1-2) earned his first Ivy win of the season in four games at No. 9, evening the score. John Dudzik (3-9, 1-4) was unable to capitalize on his first-game win, and fell at the third position in four games.

Liam Quinn (5-7, 1-4) fell at No. 5 in the early going of the second rotation, but Daniel Judd (7-5, 2-3) stepped up and won his match at the eighth position in four games. The Red and Blue were on the verge of evening the match heading into the final rotation, as Derek Chilvers (3-9, 1-4) was on the brink of victory at No. 3. Despite being up, 2-1, the junior was unable to finish and fell in the full five games, 3-2.

Trailing 4-2 and needing to win all three matches in the final rotation, the Quakers looked to pull off the upset. Unfortunately, the matches at No. 1 and No. 4 quickly finished in the Elis’ favor as Danny Greenberg (3-8, 0-5) and Augie Frank (2-10, 0-5) each fell in three games. Despite the overall loss, Tyler Odell (8-4, 3-2) was able to maintain the top individual record for Penn with another victory, winning in five games at the seventh position.

Penn is now tied for sixth in the Ivy League with its next opponent, Columbia (6-7, 1-4), and will face the Lions in New York, N.Y. on Feb. 8 for a 6:30 p.m. match.
