PHILADELPHIA – Penn (3-0) had another easy day at Levy on Sunday, winning its third match of the spring, 7-0 – all three victories have been by the same margin. The win snapps Richmond’s (3-4) three-match win streak, and also stopped the Spiders’ quest to sweep Philadelphia in their weekend road trip around the City of Brotherly Love.

In doubles competition, the 14th-ranked pair in the nation of Sol Eskenazi and Sonya Latycheva (2-0) easily defeated the Richmond duo of Melissa Kandinata and Katya Salas, 8-2, in the first flight. At second doubles, co-captains Stephanie Do and Jules Rodin (1-0) teamed up for the first time in 2012-13, and defeated Anna Abadias Morales and Emily Gitman in a close match, 8-6. The final doubles match of the day was a tight one, with Emma Whitfield and Alex Ion (2-0) besting Alexandra Smyth and Georgina Pons Cano, 8-7, in a one-game tiebreak at the third flight.

Singles went the same way for the Red and Blue as they took all six matches over the defending Atlantic-10 Conference champions. Do (3-0) stepped in at first singles, and did away with Kandinata easily; 6-1, 6-1. Latycheva (2-0) played her second match of the season, this time at second singles, and bested Abadias in straight sets; 6-3, 6-0. Ion (3-0) took the third flight match in straight sets as well, topping Salas; 6-2, 6-3. At fourth singles, Jaime Yapp-Shing (1-0) made her spring debut, and won a tough one in three sets; 1-6, 7-5, 6-4. Katherine Jania’s (3-0) match at fifth singles ended in her favor, as Smyth retired at the end of the second set; 6-2, 5-2 (ret.). The final match of the afternoon went to Whitfield (3-0) at sixth singles, as the senior defeated Pons Cano in straight sets; 6-4, 6-1.

The Quakers’ next match will be on Feb. 15 when they welcome Stony Brook to Philadelphia. The match will be Penn’s last before it heads to Florida for its spring break trip.
