2013 Women’s CSA Team Championship Brackets

PHILADELPHIA – The third-ranked Penn women’s squash team (12-2, 5-2 Ivy) heads up to New Haven, Conn. this weekend for the Howe Cup Championship. Out of the four division championships, the Howe Cup is the A Division, the highest, and winner will be the national champion. The Quakers will face a familiar foe in the first round of competition, No. 6 Cornell (12-5, 3-4), on Friday at 11 a.m.

The matchup pits Penn against a Big Red team it beat just last weekend on Senior Day in Philadelphia. The Quakers dominated Cornell in every way, winning the match and sole possession of third place in the Ivy League, 7-2. The Red and Blue are now 31-2 all-time against the Big Red, and 4-0 in Howe Cup matches as well.

Last time these two teams met in a Howe Cup match, it was last season’s consolation battle. The Quakers won, 7-2, and went on to place fifth in the final standings. This season, Penn will look to extend its winning streak against Cornell to 15 matches in a row, thus advancing to the semifinal round on Saturday.

Most likely, that semifinal match will be against No. 2 Harvard (12-1, 6-1), one of only two teams to defeat the Quakers this season. The Crimson defeated Penn in at the Ringe Courts back on Jan. 12, 6-3. Despite the gap in the overall score, the match was even closer. Two of Penn’s losses came in the full five games, and another one of those losses came in four games. Since that loss, the Quakers have won eight of nine, including five in a row, en route to earning the third seed in the Howe Cup.

Penn has not been to the finals since the 2009-10 season, and has not won the Howe Cup since its undefeated 1999-2000 team. There will be daily updates of the No. 3 Quakers’ progress at the Howe Cup Championship on pennathletics.com.

Below are the predicted individual matches against Cornell:

1. Nabilla Ariffin (P) vs. Danielle Letourneau (C)
2. Yan Xin (P) vs. Jessenia Pacheco (C)
3. Rachael Goh (P) vs. Jaime Laird (C)
4. Haidi Lala (P) vs. Abbey Foster (C)
5. Pia Trikha (P) vs. Rachel Au (C)
6. Yarden Odinak (P) vs. Maggie Remsen (C)
7. Courtney Jones (P) vs. Brynn Daniels (C)
8. Camille Lanier (P) vs. Lindsay Seginson (C)
9. Chloe Blacker (P) vs. Laura Caty (C)
