PHILADELPHIA – The Penn women’s tennis team (4-0) has begun the spring season on a mission, defeating its first three opponents, 7-0, and defending America East champion Stony Brook (1-1), 4-3, in a close one last Friday. All four of those matches were in the friendly confines of the Levy Tennis Pavilion, but the Quakers now leave Philadelphia for a six-match road trip that begins with back-to-back matches in Virginia.

The Red and Blue begins its trip in Williamsburg, Va. to face perennial Colonial Athletic Association powerhouse No. 37 William and Mary (8-2). Penn’s No. 22 doubles duo of Sol Eskenazi and Sonya Latycheva (3-0) will face its toughest test of the spring in the form of the Tribe’s fourth-ranked pair of Maria Belaya and Jeltje Loomans (8-1). The top-five doubles pair suffered its lone loss of 2013 to the No. 7 duo of Mary Clayton and Ester Goldfeld of third-ranked Duke. Penn trails William and Mary, 5-0, in the all-time series – the two teams haven’t met since March, 23, 2008 in Williamsburg.

Penn will continue its two-day stay in Virginia, travelling to Norfolk on Feb. 24 to face another CAA team, Old Dominion (5-3). The Quakers lead the Monarchs, 9-2, in the all-time series, and won eight in a row prior to the most recent meeting – ODU defeated Penn, 7-0, in Norfolk on Jan. 31, 2009. The Monarchs will meet Richmond the day prior – the Quakers dominated the Spiders earlier this season, 7-0.

The Red and Blue’s match against the Tribe is schedule to begin at 10 a.m. on Saturday, and again at 10 a.m. on Sunday against Old Dominion. Penn’s road trip will continue on when they head to Florida for three matches on March 3, 4 and 8.
