The Penn women’s fencing team wrapped up competition at the NCAA Combined Men’s and Women’s Fencing Championships on Sunday, securing 29 bout victories over two days after the men – with six qualifiers to the women’s three – had won 66 on Thursday and Friday. With 95 points, Penn finished this season with a ninth place finish out of 25 schools that sent at least one fencer to the Championships.

After ending her freshman season as national runner-up in foil, Luona Wang was unable to make a similar run this year. Though she won 16 out of 23 bouts in the round-robin competition, she found herself in a tie with Ohio State’s Mona Shaito. With Shaito having a score indictor of +35 to Wang’s +28, the Buckeye was able to move into the national semifinals while Wang settled for a fifth-place finish, still good for Second-Team All-America honors.

In women’s epee, Amrit Bhinder closed her phenomenal four-year Penn career with eight wins and an 18th place finish. Junior Gabby Foor won five bouts and placed 22nd.

Though the team slipped two spots in the overall national standings from one year ago, much of that can be attributed to the fact that Penn only sent nine fencers this year compared to 11 in 2012. On an individual level, this year was as successful as any season in recent memory. In addition to Wang’s Second-Team All-America honors, the men’s team won an individual national title for the first time in 16 years thanks to junior Michael Mills in sabre. Evan Prochniak added a Second-Team All-America showing in his senior season, while freshman Ayyub Ibrahim began his career at the NCAA Fencing Championships with a Second-Team All-America finish as well.
