PHILADELPHIA – The NCAA released its Women’s Gymnastics Championships regional selections today, and Penn senior co-captain Kirsten Strausbaugh was chosen among the field and will represent the Quakers.
Strausbaugh is now a three-time NCAA regional qualifier – the second in Penn history – and will compete in the Morgantown Regional qualifier, hosted at West Virginia University on April 6 at 6 p.m. as an all-around competitor. She is coming off her best season as a Quaker, one in which she was named co-ECAC Gymnast of the Year while being rated as the conference’s top Division I all-around gymnast.
The Virginia Beach, Va. native recently helped Penn to its second consecutive ECAC title by placing second in the all-around with a 38.775. She compiled a 9.600 (17th) on vault, 9.650 (18th) on beam, 9.725 (11th) on floor and placed second on bars with a 9.800.
Additionally, Strausbaugh has set two career highs in this her fourth and final season in the Red and Blue. The perennial first-team All-ECAC performer scored a 9.875 to place second on floor on Senior Day at the Palestra on Feb. 17 against Bridgeport – her routine was the 11th highest score in program history. At a tri-meet hosted by Penn State on March 9 she scored a 9.800 on beam to finish sixth as well.
Strausbaugh racked up 20 individual top five finishes in the four events combined, as well as competing and placing in the top five in the all-around in all 11 meets for Penn this season. Moreover, she finished first or second in the all-around seven times in 2013.
