PHILADELPHIA – After a sweep of races against Saint Joseph’s and George Washington last weekend to start the spring portion of its season, the University of Pennsylvania women’s rowing team takes a significant jump up in competition this Saturday when it hosts Yale and Columbia in the annual Connell Cup races.

Saturday’s races will take place on the Schuylkill River, the second straight weekend the Quakers will race on their home course.

Yale was ranked No. 11 in the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) preseason poll, while Columbia ranked 18th. As for Penn, the Quakers were among several teams receiving votes in the poll.

At the varsity 8 level, Yale has dominated over the years -- the Bulldogs have won this race every year since 2000 and failed to take first just three times in a race that has been run annually since 1975. Last year’s varsity 8 race saw the three boats finish within four seconds of each other, with Columbia taking second and defeating Penn for the first time since 2007.

“Coming off a very competitive weekend last week has really set up well to go into Saturday extremely confident facing two very fast Ivy League crews,” said head coach Mike Lane. “The last couple of years this race has been very close for our varsity 8+, with just three seconds separating first to last in 2012. It should make for some extremely fun racing on Saturday!”
