PHILADELPHIA - The University of Pennsylvania women's rowing team fell in the Connell Cup races, which were held Saturday on the Schuylkill River.
No. 11 Yale retained the Connell Cup with victories in three of the four races, but 18th-ranked Columbia took first place in the varsity 8 race to give the Lions their first varsity 8 win in this race that has been conducted yearly since 1975. Columbia's time of 6:21.1 was well ahead of Yale (6:26.7) and Penn (6:29.9).
In the second varsity, Yale clocked 6:28.0 over the 2,000-meter course to defeat Columbia (6:46.9) and Penn (6:47.6).
In the varsity 4 A race, Yale's 7:17.4 was well ahead of Columbia (7:24.3) and Penn (7:28.2), while in the varsity 4 B race the Bulldogs clocked 7:21.7 to again easily defeat the Lions (7:29.5) and the Quakers (7:34.6).
Penn won the third varsity 8 race; the Quakers ran two boats which were timed in 6:55.3 and 7:04.9. That was better than Yale (7:11.2).
Penn is home again next Saturday, hosting the Orange Challenge Cup against Northeastern and Syracuse.
