BOSTON, Mass. - Sam Shaw, Roman Schuster, Parker Lange, Jacques David and Alex Weinrich lifted the trophy for the University of Pennsylvania lightweights at one of the world's most prestigious regattas on Sunday. The quintet finished first at the 49th annual Head of the Charles in the lightweight four.

It was the first win in 47 years for the Penn lightweights at the Head of the Charles. The Quakers won the the lightweight eight in 1966 and had never before won the lightweight four event.

Shaw (stroke), Schuster, Lange, David (bow) and Weinrich (cox) got off to a great start and were solid through the middle 1,000 before a strong finish stopped the clock at 17:33.142. When the times were announced, Penn had topped Yale by two seconds. The rest of the field was no where near the Quakers. Only one of the other 15 boats were within 20 seconds and the majority finished more than a half minute off Penn's pace.

"It was a really good, aggressive performance and they deserved to lift the trophy at the end," said head coach Nick Baker. "We knew coming in that they had an opportunity to win, but it takes a lot more than that. They had to execute. There were rough waters and strong headwinds for the majority of the course and they handled the conditions really well. I was really excited for them."

Penn also had a boat in the lightweight eight. An all-freshmen crew competed well against the experience competition. The Quakers finished in 15:58.607 to place 13th among the 17 boats. Princeton won the race with a time of 15:03.554.

Next weekend, the Quakers will wrap up their Fall schedule with a pair of regattas. On Saturday, Penn will compete in the Head of the Schuylkill and on Sunday, the Red and Blue will be in Princeton, N.J., for the Princeton Chase.
