PHILADELPHIA - Two regattas will mark the end of the Fall season for the University of Pennsylvania lightweights this weekend. The Quakers will send a freshman boat to compete at Saturday's Head of the Schuylkill, and on Sunday, the Red and Blue will finish the Fall racing season at the Princeton Chase on Lake Carnegie.
Penn will compete in the freshman eight race at 10 a.m. on Saturday. On Sunday, the lightweight eight will race at 10:30 a.m., the freshman eight start at 1 p.m. and the lightweight four will begin at 1:30 p.m.
The Quakers are coming off the program's first win at the Head of the Charles in 47 years. Sam Shaw, Roman Schuster, Parker Lange, Jacques David and Alex Weinrich won the lightweight four for Penn's first victory at the prestigious regatta since the lightweight eight in 1966. Shaw (stroke), Schuster, Lange, David (bow) and Weinrich (cox) got off to a great start and were solid through the middle 1,000 before a strong finish stopped the clock at 17:33.142. When the times were announced, Penn had topped Yale by two seconds.
Last year, several top 10 finishes highlighted the final Fall weekend of competition for the Quakers, including a ninth-place finish for the varsity at the Princeton Chase and a third-place showing in the freshman 8 race at the Head of the Schuylkill.
