PRINCETON – Penn’s heavyweight rowing team kept up its strong progression this fall, finishing eighth in the varsity eight out of 57 boats at the Princeton Chase regatta on Lake Carnegie. The Quakers were exceptionally strong in the freshman eight race, finishing second out of 28 entries.

The varsity eight navigated the three-mile course in a time of 13:28.010, crossing 2.898 seconds ahead of ninth-place Syracuse. The Red and Blue’s A boat was ahead of annual sprint opponent, Georgetown, by 7.720 seconds, and within striking distance of Ivy rival Cornell. Penn’s ‘B’ boat was 23rd in a time of 13:55.930, just edged by Syracuse’s ‘B’ crew. Penn’s ‘C’ crew was 33rd in a time of 14:09.804.

Penn was one of two crews far and away ahead of the pack in the freshman eight, finishing second to Cal’s novice boat in a time of 13:54.210. The Golden Bears were first in 13:50.237. The Quakers’ rookies were 9.703 seconds ahead of third place Navy, and 22.486 seconds ahead of Ancient Eight rival Cornell which was sixth.

The Quakers were 10th of 54 boats in the varsity four, crossing in 15:24.741. Cal was the class of the field in the V4+, winning in 14:46.800.
