PHILADELPHIA – Preparation for the Philadelphia Invitational is in full swing for the University of Pennsylvania men and women fencing teams, as one of the biggest college fencing weekends approach. Penn will host the two-day invitational this weekend in The Coach Dave Micahnik Fencing Center. The men are set to fence at 9 a.m. on Saturday, whereas the women will fence on Sunday starting at 8:30 a.m.

Along with practice, several fencers competed at the North American Cup at Virginia Beach this past weekend to prepare for the invitational. Scoring national points towards the U.S. Senior World Cup/Olympic Teams was junior quad-captain Sarah Parmacek. Parmacek, who took the best place for a Penn fencer that day, placed 8th out of 120 entrants in women’s Foil.

In addition, a second woman fencer for Penn earned points towards the senior teams but in women’s Epee -- freshman Alejandra Trumble, who took 15th out of 132 entrants. Trumble also scored points for the Junior World Cup Team in women’s Epee, placing 10th out of 120 entrants.

Penn saw three men score national points towards the U.S. Senior World Cup/Olympic Teams: junior Jason Chang, sophomore Ayyub Ibrahim, and senior Joe Isaac. Chang placed 13th out of 173 entrants in men’s Foil, whereas Ibrahim and Isaac competed out of 255 entrants in men’s Epee, placing 19th and 22nd, respectively.

This weekend’s competition brings some familiar faces as well as new ones, as the Quakers will see teams such as Duke, UNC, Lafayette, and Johns Hopkins. A full schedule with all the teams contending can be found in the attached pdf.
