PHILADELPHIA – You wouldn’t know it from the freezing temperatures, but the spring tennis season has arrived for the University of Pennsylvania women’s team.
Despite the chilly temperatures, the Quakers open up their spring season with Old Dominion, Saturday at 12 p.m. in the Levy Tennis Pavilion.
Penn has faced the Monarchs 12 times in program history and sports a 9-3 overall record. The two teams squared off last February in Norfolk, Va., with Old Dominion edging out the Quakers, 4-3. Penn is 4-0 at home against the Monarchs.
The Quakers strength this spring will be the depth of their lineup that sent seven players to the USTA/ITA regional championships in the fall.
Individual main-draw competitors for the championships included junior Sol Eskenazi, sophomore Sonya Latycheva, and freshmen Kana Daniel and Luba Vazhenia. Seniors Jaime Yapp-Shing and Stephanie Do competed in the individual qualifying draw and junior Alex Ion joined her teammates competing in doubles competition.
With the attention now turning away from individual play and more into team competition, beginning Saturday, Penn will look to improve upon its 10-9 overall and 2-5 Ivy mark from a year ago.
