PHILADELPHIA – Back-to-back swim meets are slated for both the University of Pennsylvania men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams this weekend. The Quakers are set to swim in Sheerr Pool against West Chester on Friday at 5 p.m. and then on Saturday against La Salle at noon. This weekend marks the last non-conference dual meets the Red and Blue will swim in this season, and the Quakers will celebrate Senior Day during Saturday’s meet against the Explorers.
The last time the men’s and women’s teams competed together was when Penn hosted Brown two weekends ago. Both teams defeated the Bears; the men won 179-116 and the women came out on top 172-126.
A few of the Quakers’ top performances included the men’s 200 medley relay and the 400 free relay. Both relays broke pool records. In the 200 medley relay, the “A team” – freshman Phillip Hu, sophomore Kyle Yu, senior Rhoads Worster, sophomore Eric Schultz -- finished at 1:29.94, topping the previous pool record of 1:30.09.
Breaking the pool record of 3:01.75 in the 400 free relay was the “A team” – junior Alex Porter, junior Dillon McHugh, Worster, Schultz – which touched the wall at 3:01.13. Penn won a total of 11 events against the Bears and would have had an additional two first place finishes but swam the 200 IM and the 400 free relay as exhibition heats.
As for the women, the Quakers started off by winning the first three events: the 1 meter dive, 200 medley relay, 1000 free. Freshman Sivan Mills put up the first nine points with her score of 262.13 in the 1 meter dive.
Senior Shelby Fortin rounded out the early first place finishes with her time of 10:10.14 in the 1000 free. The Red and Blue had a total of 10 event wins and would have had another from the 400 free relay but swam the event as an exhibition heat.
After competing with Brown, the women hosted Harvard the following day. With the opportunity to give everyone a chance to swim, the Red and Blue changed their usual lineups and had several Quakers swim different events. Penn fell to the Crimson, 201-92.
