PHILADELPHIA -- It all came down to the last singles match for the University of Pennsylvania Men's Tennis team, which fell to the University of Buffalo in its home opener in Levy Tennis Pavilion Saturday afternoon, 4-3. Freshman Marshall Sharp, sophomore Vim De Alwis, and freshman Matt Nardella won their singles matches. Nardella also won his doubles match with senior Nikola Kocovic at the No. 1 spot.

After dropping the No. 3 spot in doubles, Kocovic and Nardella tied it up at one a piece, defeating Buffalo’s Damien David and Akhil Mehta, 6-2. However, the Quakers did not win the doubles point after losing the No. 2 spot.

With Buffalo up 1-0, Penn shifted the momentum in their favor after wins by Nardella and Sharp. Nardella, playing in the No. 4 slot, was first to take a set for the Quakers and the first match, as he defeated Sergio Arevalillo (6-3, 6-1). Sharp gave the Red and Blue their second point when he defeated Akhil Mehta (6-3, 6-2).

The Bulls then took two in a row at the No. 1 and 6 spots, and Penn won its third match after De Alwis won the tiebreaker in the second set against Damien David.

Tied at three each, the final point came down to the match between junior Jeremy Court and Bull Pablo Alvarez. Court took the first set, 6-4, and Alvarez took the second, 6-5. Everyone inside Levy watched while the two battled it out for the last one.

Alvarez came out on top, winning 6-4, and giving Buffalo the overall win.
