PHILADELPHIA - Senior Alyssa Baron powered the University of Pennsylvania women's basketball team to a pair of tough Ivy League road wins last weekend and was named Ivy League, ECAC and Big 5 Player of the Week on Monday by the respective conferences.
This is Baron's second Ivy Player of the Week accolade this year and ninth of her career - tied for sixth-most all-time in league history. This is also the Miami, Fla., native's second Big 5 honor this season and seventh of her career, and her second career ECAC award (Feb. 7, 2011). Baron was also named the National Mid-Major Player of the Week by College Sports Madness.
Baron averaged 26.5 points, 6.5 rebounds, 2.0 steals and 1.5 assists in the two wins. She shot 55.2 percent from the field, 57.1 percent from three and 81.0 percent from the free throw line.
In Friday's 67-57 win at first-place Cornell, the Quakers trailed at the break, but Baron scored 16 of her 28 points in the second half, including 13 of Penn's points in a decisive 17-0 run. She finished one rebound shy of a double-double and added a game-high four steals.
At Columbia, Baron nearly matched her point total from the previous night with a game-high 25. With Penn leading by just four with four minutes remaining, Baron scored four straight and six of the next eight for the Quakers. That gave Penn a comfortable eight-point lead with one-minute remaining. The Gulliver Prep product also added four rebounds and a pair of assists in the 70-63 road win.
This marks the third straight week Penn has swept the Big 5 and Ivy League Player of the Week awards. In all, the Quakers have won six Ivy League Player of the Week awards this season and four Big 5 weekly honors. Baron claimed both accolades on Dec. 9 and freshman Sydney Stipanovich swept the awards each of the previous two Mondays.
Baron and the Quakers return home to wrap up the first half of Ivy play this weekend. Yale will serve as Penn’s Valentine date with a matchup at The Palestra on Feb. 14. Bring your date to the game and get two tickets for the price of one! Select couples will win a special Sweetheart Package.
The following night, Brown will visit the Cathedral of College Basketball for Penn’s annual Think pink Game—fans will receive free pink t-shirts, pink moustaches and pom-poms in addition to free strawberry milk courtesy of the Mid-Atlantic Dairy Association. Both contests will tip at 7 p.m.
