Charlottesville, Va. – The University of Pennsylvania women’s swimming team finished the Cavalier Invite with a total of 445 points and a third place finish. Hosted by the University of Virginia, the two day event concluded Saturday evening at the Aquatic and Fitness Center.
Day one of the meet saw Penn only compete in the 200 free relay and the 400 medley relay, earning 138 points. In the 200 free relay, the “A team” -- sophomore Emily Baturka, freshman Laine Higgins, sophomore Catherine Yee, and sophomore Sydney Stinner -- completed the heat in second place with a time of 1:37.69, putting up 34 team points. The “B team” -- junior Emily Ashton, senior Clarissa Palmer, junior Elyssa Pedote, and sophomore Moriah Cesaretti -- then contributed 30 points with their fourth place finish and time of 1:41.04. In the 400 medley relay, the Quakers took a one-two finish and a total of 74 team points, as the “A team” completed the heat at 3:56.76 and the “B team” at 4:00.76.

Saturday’s events started with the 200 medley relay, which the Red and Blue earned points in from their third and fourth place finishes. The “A team” -- Baturka, senior Anne Maercklein, freshman Lucy Chai, and Higgins -- was first to touch the wall for Penn at 1:46.16 and was followed by the “B team” -- freshman Rachel Swarts, freshman Taylor Campbell, junior Theresa Dula, and senior Katie Orem -- who touched at 1:48.94. The Quakers added 63 points from their finishes.
Junior Carly Gurick and senior Julia Anderson put up 32 more points with their second and fourth place finishes in the 400 IM. Gurick completed the heat first for the Red and Blue at 4:34.31, while Anderson came in next at 4:44.16. Anderson also added another 16 team points with her third place finish in the 1650 free (17:44.28).
Elsewhere in the 200 breast, Maercklein earned a fourth place finish with her time of 2:22.59. Her finish contributed 15 points towards the team total.
The day’s events ended with the 400 free relay in which Penn placed second and third. The “A team” -- Stinner, Baturka, Higgins, and junior Jesse Evans -- completed the heat with a time of 3:35.54 and the “B team” -- Cessaretti, Gurick, Chai, and Campbell -- came in next at 3:40.12.
