DALLAS - Taking a 4-1 lead into the bottom of the eighth inning, the University of Pennsylvania baseball team relented two runs, and two more in the bottom of the ninth, dropping its opening game, 5-4, to Dallas Baptist University at Horner Ballpark Friday evening.

Penn showed little of the rust that can usually define a first game of the season. The Quakers were led offensively by Rick Brebner (3 for 4, 2B), Mitch Montaldo (HR, 1B, SB) and Marshall Harden (HR).

On the mound the Quakers' junior right-hander Connor Cuff went six innings allowing only one unearned run, striking out seven.

Penn took the lead in the top of the third on Montaldo’s home run. DBU answered in the bottom of the third with a single, stolen base and throwing error, eventually scoring on a sacrifice fly.

The Quakers scored once again in the fourth after a Brebner single and Jeff McGarry double to left field, and again in the fifth, when Austin Bossart ground out to second base scored Ryan Mincher.

Penn would take a 4-1 lead in the top of the eighth inning after Harden’s home run to left field.

With freshman Andrew Burnick on the mound in the bottom of the eighth inning, DBU’s Mike Wesolowski singled before Austin Listi homered to make the score, 4-3.

Sophomore Mitch Holtz pitched the ninth for the Red and Blue issuing two walks and hitting a batter before giving up a single up the middle to the Patriots’ Justin Wall, plating two runs, and giving DBU the walk-off win.

Penn (0-1) and DBU (7-2) will face off in games two and three on Saturday, playing a doubleheader tomorrow beginning at 3 p.m.

On the mound for Penn is junior right-hander Dan Gautieri (5-3, 2.17 ERA, 58.0 IP in 2013), and for DBU junior right-hander Cy Sneed (1-1 3.09 ERA 11.2 IP 4 BB 9 K).
