PHILADELPHIA - Following a record-setting home opener, the University of Pennsylvania track and field teams will head South again. The Quakers will compete at N.C. State's annual Raleigh Relays on Friday and Saturday.

Events will begin at 8:45 a.m. on Friday with the steeplechase. The first field events of the 2014 Raleigh Relays will be the men's discus and the women's shot put at 10 a.m. The first day of competition will conclude with the late-night distance events -- capped by the men's 10,000 meters at 10:35 p.m. Saturday begins at 9:30 a.m. with the second section of the 10,000 meters and will end at 4:45 p.m. with the 4x400-meter relay.

Last week at the home opener at Franklin Field, the Quakers posted several victories, but the highlight came in the discus where Penn set two school records with throws from Sam Mattis and freshman Nailah HillMattis previously held the men's record, which he set last year, at a distance of 58.34 meters. On Saturday, he had a toss of 59.94 meters. It was a good day in the discus for the women as well as Hill bumped off the school's all-time top throw of 45.46 meters, which was recorded by Monica Maccani back in 2001. Hill took the top spot with her toss of 45.82 meters.

Last year in Raleigh, then-freshman Thomas Awad highlighted the meet with a victory in the 5,000 meters in 14:04.75. That was the third-fastest time in school history, the fastest by a Quaker in 35 years and the sixth-fastest in the nation at the time. The last Quaker to hit that mark was Steve Shotles when he set the school standard at 13:51.2 in 1978. Maalik Reynolds won his section of the high jump when he cleared 2.15 meters.

A full recap will be available at PennAthletics.com shortly after the conclusion of the meet.
