PHILADELPHIA – Winners of 11 straight games, the University of Pennsylvania baseball team faces a midweek game against Saint Joseph’s on Tuesday, April 8, in the second round of the Liberty Bell Classic.

The Quakers (15-10) boast the second-longest winning streak in the nation currently, just one game behind Sacramento State, winners of 12 straight. The 11 wins for Penn is its longest winning streak since 1989, when the Red and Blue put together 19 straight wins en route to a league championship and NCAA regional appearance.

In addition to the winning streak, Penn beginning 8-0, has produced its best start in Ivy League play in program history. The Quakers started 10-0 in league play in 1989, before finishing with a 15-3 record in what was then the Eastern Intercollegiate Baseball League (EIBL). Penn and the other Ivy League teams participated in the EIBL from 1930 to 1992. That league included Army and Navy. Beginning in 1993, the eight League schools have competed in an Ivy-only conference schedule.

The 8-0 start in league play is the best by an Ivy school since Dartmouth in 2009. The Big Green started 11-0, finishing the season with a 16-4 league record and winning the championships series over Cornell.

The winner of the Penn and Saint Joseph’s (15-9) matchup will advance to the final of the Liberty Bell Classic, to be played at the Philadelphia Phillies Citizens Bank Park. The last time the two teams met was in the Liberty Bell Classic final in 2012, at Citizens Bank, which the Hawks won 6-3.

Tuesday’s second round game of the Liberty Bell Classic will begin at 3 p.m. at Meiklejohn Stadium.
