PRINCETON, N.J. - In the Wood-Hammond Cup races, the University of Pennsylvania lightweights finished with a pair of runner-up performances against Princeton and Georgetown. Both the freshmen and the varsity finished second on Saturday morning on Lake Carnegie.

Crews had to deal with a stiff headwind throughout the morning, but the water remained flat for most of the competition. In the varsity race, Princeton retained the Wood-Hammond Cup with a first-place finish. They outpaced the Quakers and Hoyas to the finish line with a winning time of 6:18.57. Penn eventually pulled away from Georgetown, who joined the cup race as a guest, and finished in 6:28.38. The Hoyas crossed the finish line in 6:36.14.

The Penn freshmen participated in the second varsity race with the Tigers and Hoyas and also finished as the runner up. Princeton's second varsity won with a time of 6:35.04 and the Quakers came across at 6:46.85 -- which easily outdistanced Georgetown's second varsity finish of 7:07.76.

In the only other race of the day, Penn's third varsity/second freshman boat was third (7:17.02) to Princeton's third varsity (6:50.2) and fourth varsity (6:59.2). Georgetown was fourth at 7:21.34.

Next week the Quakers will try to retain the Callow Cup. Penn won the cup back for the first time in 13 years last season with a win over Navy on the Severn River. It will also mark Senior Day for the Quakers on the Schuylkill River.
