PHILADELPHIA – USA Field Hockey inducted its first class of Hall of Fame and Honorary Membership members in nearly a decade on June 29, and University of Pennsylvania alum Julia Staver went into the Hall along with the rest of her teammates on the United States’ bronze medal-winning 1984 Olympic Team. The inductions took place at Spooky Nook Sports in Lancaster, Pa.

The USA Field Hockey Hall of Fame is designed to honor players, coaches, umpires and administrators who have enhanced the sport of field hockey through exceptional achievements. The USA Field Hockey Hall of Fame Honorary Membership is designed to honor those who have given long and exceptional service to USA Field Hockey and have made significant contributions to the sport in the U.S. or internationally.

A 1989 inductee into the United States Field Hockey Association Hall of Fame, Staver was captain of the 1980 U.S. Olympic field hockey team and co-captain in 1984. (No U.S. team has had a better finish at the Olympics since that 1984 team.) Staver played on numerous U.S. national field hockey and lacrosse teams throughout the 1970s and 1980s, including field hockey World Cup teams in 1979 and 1982 along with her Olympic stints.

Staver was a member of the inaugural Penn Athletics Hall of Fame class in 1996, after earning All-America honors in both field hockey (1973) and lacrosse (1973, 1974) for the Quakers. She was recipient of the University’s Association of Alumnae Fathers’ Award as the University’s outstanding senior female athlete in 1974. Today, both the field hockey and lacrosse programs still present the Julia Staver Award to the outstanding athlete who competes in both sports.

In addition to her undergraduate work at Penn, Staver also received a degree in veterinary medicine from the University in 1982.
