PHILADELPHIA - Two members of the University of Pennsylvania heavyweight rowing team -- Joe Simon and Lou Lombardi -- and newly-appointed lightweights head coach Colin Farrell will represent the United States at the U-23 World Rowing Championships from July 23-27 in Varese, Italy.

The United States Rowing Association announced the national team roster on Friday and included the trio of Quakers. Simon will row in the men's 4- and Lombardi is a member of Team USA's men's 8+. Lombardi served as Penn's coxswain for the varsity boat this past season, while Simon held the fifth seat for the Quakers.

Farrell is coaching the lightweight men's 4-. He is making his fourth straight stint as the coach and sponsor of that boat. Farrell was appointed as head coach of the Penn lightweights on July 1 after serving as an assistant the past two seasons. Just prior to settling in at Penn, Farrell coached the Under-23 lightweight four at the World Championships in Trakai, Lithuania, where they finished seventh overall with a first-place finish in the petite final. In 2011, Farrell coached that boat to a ninth-place finish at the World Championships. Last year, he coached that boat to the Grand Final and a sixth-place finish in Austria -- the fifth-best finish all-time for the U.S. in that race.

"It's always an honor to represent your country in your sport," Farrell said. "Even after four years of coaching this group, that feeling is never lost on me. From Penn's perspective, I know that all three of us will be brining back what we've learned to make Penn Crew stronger, faster, and better. Plus, I'm excited to have two fellow Quakers over there to share the trip with!"

"It is a very exciting and unreal accomplishment to be selected as the U23 coxswain," Lombardi said. "I am ecstatic that my teammate Joe and I were selected, as we join the list of legendary Penn Oarsmen who have competed on U23 teams. We thank Penn, Coach Myhr, concerned alumni, and our families for love and support. As always, Go Penn Go and Go USA!"

PennAthletics.com will recap the Penn performances at the conclusion of the U-23 World Rowing Championships.
