The face of sprint football at the University of Pennsylvania, Bill Wagner is entering his 45th year as head coach of the Penn Quakers' team in the fall of 2014. This past season he led Penn to a 3-4 record, while coaching the league's top offensive team with the third-ranked rusher and second-ranked passer, as well as the league's leading tackler on defense.

In 2011, Penn went 5-2 and finished with the best record amongst Ivy League schools in the Collegiate Sprint Football League (CSFL). This season came on the heels of his fourth CSFL championship in 2010.

During his tenure, Wagner was honored in 2002 when his name was put on the trophy that goes to the highest Ivy League finisher in the CSFL each year-the William R. Wagner Trophy.

He has enjoyed great success over the last few years, including the most recent  CSFL Championship season in 2010 where his team went 6-1 and was named CSFL Co-Champions. The 2010 Quakers were also the recipient of the William R. Wagner Trophy, given to the highest placing Ivy League School. Prior to this season, he led the Quakers to a 4-3 mark in 2009 and 5-2 overall record in 2008, but achieved no greater accomplishment than an undefeated 6-0 season in 2000, the program's first perfect season since 1931. It was also the first time the Red and Blue defeated Army and Navy in the same season.

Wagner recorded his first ELFL title in 1996, leading Penn to a 5-1 overall mark and a tie for the league championship with Army and Navy (all were 3-1 in league play). In 1998, led by MVP Tim Ortman, the team again captured the league title.

A New Jersey native, Wagner came to Penn in 1970 after earning a distinguished coaching reputation at Woodrow Wilson and Cherry Hill East High Schools in southern New Jersey. He led Wilson to a New Jersey Group IV championship in football.

Wagner earned both his bachelor's and master's degrees in education from Trenton State College (now the College of New Jersey). While there, the Lion Hall-of-Famer was an All-New Jersey Athletic Conference selection in football, baseball and basketball, earning 11 varsity letters. Following graduation, Wagner spent over 20 years playing semi-pro baseball in the Delaware Valley area. He currently plays 48-and-over fast-pitch baseball in the South Jersey Hot Stovers League, of which he is also president.

Penn's sprint football coach concluded his 34-year reign as pitching coach for the Quakers baseball team in 2005. Wagner's diamond accolades include the Quakers' national ERA title in 1988 (2.72), three straight Eastern Intercollegiate Baseball League (EIBL) titles from 1988-90 and Penn's trip to the NCAA Midwest Regional in Oklahoma City, Okla. after winning the 1995 Ivy League Championship. Wagner's tutelage helped Penn pitchers rewrite the strikeout mark three times, including 2002 when they shattered the mark by striking out 259 batters. In 2003, three of his pitchers were taken in the Major League Baseball Draft-Andrew McCreery and Ben Krantz were selected by the Arizona Diamondbacks, while Russ Brocato was taken by the Baltimore Orioles.

Wagner, who was inducted into the South Jersey Baseball Hall of Fame in 1999, and his wife Connie reside in Voorhees, N.J. They have three children (Bill, Beth, Stephen) and nine grandchildren (Sara, Caroline, Emily, Abigail, Giselle, Ethan, Grace, Michael, Hannah).
