New York – The six-event wins by the University of Pennsylvania women’s swimming and diving team were not quite enough to defeat Columbia today at Uris Pool. The Quakers came up 32 points shy of the Lions, in the first Ivy meet of the season. Penn fell, 166-134, in its first loss of the season.

Columbia pulled ahead with wins in the first two events. In the third event, the 1000 free, the Red and Blue captured their first win. Senior Kristi Edleson finished in 10:05.41 with sophomore Annie McCotter close behind in second at 10:07.35. Penn followed up with another win in the 200 free, from senior Shelby Fortin (1:50.79)

The Lions went on to win eight more events, giving them the necessary points to win the meet. They are now 3-0 this season.

Freshman Rochelle Dong took first in two events -- the 50 free (23.55) and the 100 free (50.65). Finishing behind Dong in the 100 free was junior Irene Katopodis (52.09). Sophomore Lauren Church followed the one-two finish with a win in the 200 back at 1:59.68. Columbia finished right behind Church at 1:59.87.

Penn finished the meet on a high note. The 400 free relay A team closed with a win, with the B and C teams right behind. The A team -- sophomore Emma Siewert, Church, Katopodis, and Fortin – finished with a time of 3:27.71. Sophomore Morgan Scott, freshman Haley Wickham, junior Lauryn Brown, and sophomore Sydney Stinner took the second-place time at 3:33.50. Even though the Penn C team finished before the Columbia C and D teams, they were not awarded points. Finishing 3.95 seconds before the Lions were junior Taylor Sneed, sophomore Annie McCotter, sophomore Emily Baturka, and junior Tina Hurley (3:35.80).

Next up for the Red and Blue will be another Ivy meet in Ithaca, New York. The Quakers will battle both Cornell and Columbia in the Saturday event.
