PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania women’s squash team is off to a fast start in the 2013-14 campaign. The third-ranked Quakers (3-0) took down No. 7 Stanford, 9-0, and No. 14 George Washington, 8-1, on Sunday.

In the early match against Stanford, the Red and Blue’s No. 1, Yan Xin Tan, capped off the shutout victory by defeating Madeleine Gill 3-0. Gill is the twin sister of Penn’s Leslie Gill, who won earlier in the match 3-0 over Julia Hemmendinger.

The afternoon match proved again the Quakers’ depth No. 1-9. Through three matches this season Penn has shown the ability to take the lead early, with winning performances by sophomores Colleen Fehm and Carey Celata, and juniors Ailsa Agnew and Gill.

For the first time in the young season, the Quakers' top two positions were tested. Haidi Lala won a fifth and deciding game, narrowly escaping past George Washington’s Breanne Flynn with a 3-2 victory. Tan suffered her first defeat of the season, losing 3-1 to Anna Gabriela Porras.

Senior Hyland Murphy notched her first win of the season over George Washington, playing in the No. 9 position.

The Penn women’s team will now take a break from competition until after the New Year, returning to action against Ivy League opponent Dartmouth on Jan. 11 in Hanover, N.H.
