CHATTANOOGA – Penn sent two wrestlers to the podium at a very loaded Southern Scuffle, with sixth-place finisher Lorenzo Thomas leading the way. He was joined on the podium by eighth-place finisher Caleb Richardson as the Quakers kicked off the 2014 portion of their season against a field likely to resemble the one many Penn grapplers hope to see in March at the NCAA Championships.

Caleb Richardson was a revelation for the Quakers at 125 pounds, garnering national notoriety with wins over multiple top-ranked opponents. After a convincing 6-0 win over No. 4 seed and national No. 7 Corey Keener on Day One, Richardson rebounded from a frustrating 4-3 loss in the quarterfinals to American’s No. 5 seed and national No. 9 David Terao defeat No. 6 seed Anthony Zanetta of Pitt, 9-7, in the Round of 12 to place. Richardson had four takedowns in the match, scoring twice in the first period to build a 4-1 lead. A takedown midway through the third period provided the separation needed to stave of Zanetta. In the Seventh Place Match, Richardson allowed three backpoints early in the second period, and couldn’t recover to former Blair Academy teammate Evan Silver in a 7-1 loss.

No. 5 seed and national No. 9 Lorenzo Thomas wrestled to sixth place at 184 pounds, posting a 3-3 record in the tournament. All of his losses were to ranked opponents, including No. 1 seed and national No. 1 Ed Ruth of Penn State in the semifinals. Thomas was able to hang with the two-time defending national champion in the first period, trailing 7-3 after three minutes – notching a reversal along the way – but Ruth picked up his 84th consecutive win by racking up the points in the third period en route to a 22-7 win.  In the sixth place match, Thomas allowed a takedown late in the first period after No. 2 seed Kevin Steinhaus of Minnesota secured a body lock. Thomas was able to get back in the match after a full ride in the second period, but two takedowns from Steinhaus in the third were the difference. The highlights for Thomas were his team-high seventh pin in the second round on Day One, and a decision over No. 4 seed Matt McCutcheon of Penn State in the quarterfinals.

As a team, the Quakers finished 19th with 31 points.

The Red and Blue return to the mats Jan. 11 at Nebraska at 6 p.m.
