STATE COLLEGE, Pa. – It was a very happy new year for the University of Pennsylvania women’s fencing team, who went undefeated in its first competition of 2014. The Quakers competed against five teams -- Duke, UNC, Penn State, Temple, and Haverford -- at the PSU Invitational on Sunday, three of which are ranked on College Fencing 360 Women’s Fencing Coaches Poll. After Sunday’s bouts, the Red and Blue are 5-1 this season.

Penn claimed its first victory of the day in the morning, when the Quakers defeated the No. 10 ranked team Duke, 20-7. The Red and Blue then fenced and defeated UNC, also 20-7. Though Penn won all three weapons against the Blue Devils, the Tarheels won sabre, 5-4.

The third team the Quakers faced was host school Penn State, which is ranked No. 6. The Red and Blue took the advantage in Epee winning 5-4, but the Nittany Lions evened things out after Foil, winning 5-4. With the score at nine apiece, PSU took the first point in Sabre. Penn then responded with four wins in a row, only to have Penn State even the score once again. Down to the final bout, it was sophomore Tiffany Chan who claimed the win in sabre, giving the Quakers the 14-13 victory.

Even though the Red and Blue defeated Penn State, the day was far from over as Penn still had two more schools to dual.

Next up was Temple, the No. 9 ranked team. The Quakers took wins in each weapon, giving them a 17-10 victory.

Last for the Red and Blue was Haverford, which won Epee but dropped Foil and Sabre, leading the Quakers to a 21-6 victory and a perfect score of 5-0 on the day.

Next up for Penn is the North American Cup at Virginia Beach. Duals start Friday and continue through Monday.
