PHILADELPHIA – It was a tough loss for the University of Pennsylvania men’s tennis team, which dropped its first Ivy match of the 2014 spring season to Yale at the Hamlin Tennis Courts Sunday afternoon, 4-2. The outcome was riding on the conclusion of the No. 3 and 5 singles matches, which coincidentally were being played side-by-side. In the end, Yale pulled out the win at the No. 3 spot, ending the match with a victory.

Troubles began for the Quakers when they dropped the doubles point. The dynamic duo of senior co-captain Zach Katz and junior Jeremy Court easily handled senior Bulldogs Pat Chase and Kyle Dawson, 8-5. The Red and Blue looked as if they might sweep the doubles point as the pairs at one and three looked good. However, both Penn doubles started losing their luster and fell by identical scores of 8-7.

At No. 4, Katz moved quickly and took the first set with a perfect 6-0 score. Dawson, who was playing against Katz, was able to earn two points, but it wasn’t enough as Katz went on the take the next set, 6-2, tying up the overall team score.

The score was tied once more at two after Bulldog Tyler Lu defeated senior co-captain Nikola Kocovic at the No. 1 spot, and sophomore Blaine Willenborg defeated Yale’s Pat Chase at the No. 6 spot.

Yale took the lead with a win at No. 2 from Martin Svenning over Vim De Alwis, and all eyes were on the two matches still being played. Freshman Matt Nardella, who was only behind 2-3 in the second set, fell even more behind and ultimately dropped the set, 6-3. However, Nardella and Bulldog Photos Photiades ended up not completing their third set once Yale’s Daniel Faierman took out Court in the third set at the No. 3 spot.

Penn will be back in action this weekend for its first Ivy road contests, when the Quakers take on the Big Green on Saturday in Hanover at 2 p.m. On Sunday, the Red and Blue will then play the Crimson at 2 p.m.
