PHILADELPHIA - Rising sophomore Brendan Shearn will represent the University of Pennsylvania and Team USA at the IAAF World Junior Championships on Tuesday night at historic Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore. Shearn will compete in the 10,000 meters at 11:35 p.m. (EST).

There are 42 athletes representing 21 countries in the 10,000 meters. Shearn, a native of Asland, Pa., and Jonathan Green of Massachusetts and Georgetown University, are the only two Americans in the race. Shearn and Green are both in the second heat and will most likely start after midnight on the East Coast and shortly after 9 p.m., local time in Oregon.

Shearn earned his spot at the World Junior Championships with a silver medal performance at the USA Junior Championships -- also held in Eugene -- on July 6. The top two finishers in each event earn the right to represent Team USA and Shearn was six seconds faster than the bronze finisher. Shearn crossed the finish line in 30:55.52 to claim his spot over the 19 competitors in the event.

The 2014 edition of the IAAF World Junior Championships mark the first time the event has ever been held in the United States. The meet will take place July 22-27.

A full recap of Shearn's performance at the World Junior Championships can be found at PennAthletics.com after the conclusion of the race.
