NWCA Release

PHILADELPHIA -
Eight NCAA Division I wrestling programs were honored this week for success in the Academic Progress Report (APR) and for the fourth consecutive year, Penn was honored. For the Quakers, the fourth straight recognition ties Northwestern for the longest active streakamong Division I programs.

"We strive as a program to achieve success not only on the mat, but in the classroom," head coach Rob Eiter said. "We have been fortunate in the past few years to not only produce EIWA champions and All-Americans but Academc All-Ivy and NWCA All-Academic individuals as well. I am very proud of every member of our team as this is truly a fine example of how well-rounded our wrestlers are."

The NCAA "commends" teams that have APR scores in the top 10 percent within their sport, with the minimum necessary score ranging from 975 to a perfect mark of 1000 depending on the range of team scores nationwide within that sport.

Now in its eighth year, the APR provides a real-time look at a team's academic success each semester or quarter by tracking the academic progress of each student-athlete. The APR includes eligibility, retention, and graduation in the calculation and provides a clear picture of the academic culture in each sport.

"Penn and Northwestern's programs have set the bar high in sustaining academic excellence," said Mike Moyer, the Executive Director of the National Wrestling Coaches Association. "We are proud of what these programs have demonstrated over the course of time and equally proud of the four programs earning this recognition for the first time."

Penn's wrestling team joined 16 other Penn programs to rank the Quakers tied for fourth among all Division I colleges and universties on this year's APR report. On the conference front, the Ivy League was tops with 131 total programs commended.
