ITHACA, N.Y. - The Penn field hockey team gave up four first-half goals to Cornell on Saturday and could not make up the deficit, falling 4-0 to the Big Red in the Ivy League opener for both teams.
Hannah Balleza scored each of Cornell's first three goals for a natural hat trick, and then Elly Plappert concluded the scoring late in the period. It was unfortunate break for Penn, which put eight of its nine first-half shots on goal only to see every one of them saved (one by a defensive player).
Cornell ended up outshooting Penn, 15-14, and forced Carly Sokach to make six saves on the day. For the Quakers, Emily Corcoran had four shots (three on goal) while Elizabeth Hitti had three. Both Julie Tahan and Sunny Stirewalt had two apiece.
Penn returns to action on Wednesday night with a 5 p.m. start time at La Salle.
