VILLANOVA, Pa. - The University of Pennsylvania field hockey team got goals from Amelia Cohen, Elizabeth Hitti and Sunny Stirewalt, and the Quakers knocked off Villanova, 3-2, Wednesday night at Villanova Stadium.
The win was Penn's first on the Main Line since 1994, snapping a streak of eight straight losses at Villanova. Overall, the Quakers had lost six in a row to the Wildcats prior to Wednesday's win.
Villanova (6-12) took the lead in the 19th minute when Leah High took a Kayla Kenney pass from the top of the circle and pushed it into the goal.
Penn (8-7) needed less than two minutes to draw level. Off a corner, Stirewalt found Cohen at the right post and the junior netted her sixth of the season. The score was 1-1 at the half.
Penn took a lead it would not relinquish nine minutes into the second stanza, as Hitti scored after re-directing an Emily Corcoran shot from the middle of the circle. It was the freshman's sixth goal this season. Fourteen minutes later, Stirewalt made it 3-1 with her team-leading eighth goal of the season off a direct shot from a corner. Helene Caniglia was credited with the assist.
Villanova made it 3-2 with less than five minutes left, as Jessica Swoboda scored off a corner. Amy Jackson and High were credited with assists.
Carly Sokach had five saves in the Penn goal, while Alex Diekmann had three stops in the Villanova cage. The Wildcats outshot the Quakers, 21-9, but the corners were pretty even with Villanova holding a slight, 10-9 edge.
Penn will host Brown Sunday afternoon in its final home game of the 2012 season. The Quakers and the Bears will face off at noon on Franklin Field.
