New York City - The men's swimming team received several promising performances from newcomers on Friday night, but fell to Columbia in the season opener for both team, 182.5-115.5. Penn claimed victories in five of the night's 16 events.

Following a second place showing from Will Hartje on the 3-meter boards to start the night, the Quakers' 200 Medley Relay team of Dillon McHugh, Kyle Yu, Rhoads Worster and Alex Porter finished second to a surprising outing from Columbia's 'B' team, finishing second in 1:32.78. Newcomer Chris Swanson followed that up in the night's third event, the 1000 Freestyle, with his first collegiate victory, touching the wall in 9:29.66 Alex Elias came in third in 9:33.28.

Yu will have large shoes to fill in the breaststroke events, but he was acquitted himself quite nicely on Friday night, winning both the 100 and 200 Breaststroke events. He first won the 100 in a time of 57.89, edging two Columbia swimmers to the finish, before posting a time of 2:05.44 in the 200 to win going away.

Penn's other winners on the night were Porter in the 100 Freestyle (46.72) and Worster in the 100 Butterfly (49.49).

The night's last event was once again a showcase for Penn's youth. John Germanis, Porter, Eric Schultz and Chris Fleming filled out the 'A' team in the 200 Freestyle Relay, finishing second in 1:24.29, less than three-quarters of a second behind the winning Columbia team.

Penn is back in action on Saturday at 1 p.m. to open its home season at Sheerr Pool. The Quakers will face the Connecticut Huskies in a dual meet with both the men's and women's teams competing.
