PHILADELPHIA - The University of Pennsylvania head men's lacrosse coach, Mike Murphy, has announced the program's 2013 schedule. The Quakers will play five home games and two other neutral-site games in the Philadelphia area to highlight the slate.
"We are very excited about our 2013 schedule," said Murphy, who enters his fourth season as head coach. "We again will face top national and local teams, as well as our Ivy League rivals. The tough non-conference schedule will be a challenge, but I hope that raises the level of everything we do, and prepares us well for our league games. We have lofty goals as a program, and want our schedule to reflect that."
Penn will start the season with two home games; the Quakers host traditional power Duke on Friday, Feb. 22, followed four days later when Saint Joseph's comes to Franklin Field. After that, Penn heads to Denver for the second straight year, this time to face the University of Denver. The Quakers are at Lehigh on Tuesday, March 5.
Penn and Villanova renew what has become a fierce regional rivalry on Saturday, March 9; this year's matchup will take place on a neutral field, PPL Park in Chester, Pa. (home of Major League Soccer's Philadelphia Union), as part of the Whitman's Sampler Independence Classic. The game will be broadcast to a worldwide audience on ESPN3.com. One week later, on March 16, Penn opens the Ivy League campaign by hosting Princeton at 3 p.m. That game is the first of six straight Ivy League Saturdays. The Quakers are at Cornell on March 23, then host Yale on March 30. Penn is at Brown on April 6 and at Harvard on April 13, then finishes the conference run by hosting Dartmouth on April 20.
Penn will complete the regular season with a non-conference game against Bellarmine on Saturday, April 27. That game will be played at Radnor High School as part of the Katie Samson Lacrosse Festival, a day-long event that raises money for spinal cord research.
This year's Ivy League Tournament will once again feature the top four teams in the regular-season standings and takes place Friday, May 3 and Sunday, May 5.
