PHILADELPHIA – Penn women’s tennis (4-0) took down yet another conference champion on Friday, defeating Stony Brook (0-1) 4-3 at Levy Pavilion. The Quakers’ victory evens the series against the Seawolves at one apiece.

The Red and Blue started off the day strong, sweeping the doubles competition by winning all three matches. The 22nd ranked pair in the country of Sol Eskenazi and Sonya Latycheva defeated Stony Brook’s Polina Movchan and Becky Shtilkind at first doubles, 8-3. Co-captains Stephanie Do and Jules Rodin mimicked that success, defeating Nini Lagvilava and Louise Badoche in a tight second doubles match, 8-7 (1). The third duo of Emma Whitfield and Katherine Jania finished off doubles competition, defeating Chloe Pike and Cassandra Dix, 8-5.

The singles competition was the toughest it’s been for Penn all season long. The Quakers were defeated by the Seawolves,4-3, last season, and the evenness of the two squads certainly showed. At first singles, Eskenazi met Lagvilava in a very even match. Unfortunately, Lagvilava dealt Penn its first individual-match loss of the spring, as Eskenazi fell in straight sets; 7-5, 7-5. The match between Latycheva and Movchan was the lengthiest of the afternoon, going the full three sets. The Penn freshman took the first set easily, 6-1, but the second set went to a tie break, which Movchan ultimately won, 7-6 (3). The final set went Movchan’s way; 6-4.

Third singles saw Do go the full three sets, besting Badoche; 6-2, 6-7 (1), 6-1. Jaime Yapp-Shing dominated at fourth singles against Shtilkind, winning her second match of the season in straight sets; 6-1, 6-0. Jackie Altansarnai topped Alex Ion in three sets at fifth singles; 6-1, 1-6, 6-2. Sixth singles went the Quakers’ way as Jania bested Dix in straight sets; 6-2, 6-3.

Penn will be back in action on Feb. 23 when it travels to Williamsburg, Va. to face William & Mary. The match against the Tribe kicks off the Red and Blue’s six-match southern state road trip.
