BOSTON, Mass. - Freshman Thomas Awad had the first two points of the 2013 Indoor
Heptagonal Championships for the University of Pennsylvania men's track
and field team on Saturday afternoon. The Quakers also qualified five
runners for Sunday's finals at Harvard's Gordon Track.
Championship
Sunday begins with the high jump at 10:30 a.m., and the track events
start with the mile at 12:40 p.m. The 2013 Heptagonal
team champion will be announced around 4:30 p.m. For live updates and
results throughout the meet, see the link atop this release.
At Heps, the top eight advance past the preliminaries and the top-six finishers will score in the finals of each event on Sunday. Most event finals will take place on Sunday. Awad earned two points for the Quakers in his first career Heptagonal race. He won his section of the 3,000 meters with the fifth-best time in school history. His collegiate-best effort of 8:10.20 held in the scoring and placed him fifth overall. It also marked the fastest 3,000 by a Quaker since Nolan Tully ran 8:06.73 in 2005. Two seniors qualified for the finals in the 60-meter hurdles. Michael Brown and Seck Barry
will race for the Heps title on Sunday. Barry finished eighth among
qualifiers with a season-best effort of 8.32, while Brown was also
fourth in his heat with a time of 8.35. The Quakers also had a qualifier in the mile. Freshman Clark Shurtleff reached Sunday's final with a time of 4:10.82. It was the best mark by a Quaker this season and placed the rookie eighth overall in the preliminaries. Sophomore Tom Timmins and junior Mato Bekelja
will also run for an individual Heps title on Sunday. Timmins reached
the finals of the 500 meters with a time of 1:04.24 - fifth-best in the
preliminaries, while Bekelja was fourth among qualifiers in the 800
meters with the 10th-best indoor 800 in school history. Bekelja stopped
the clock at 1:51.87 to set a new personal best and reach the school
record book. Freshman Ben Bowers is in the scoring after the first day of the pentathlon. Bowers sits in sixth place with 2,821 points through four events. The final three events take place Sunday. His top event on Day One was the high jump. He won that competition as the only athlete to clear 2.02 meters (6 fee, 7 1/2 inches). Senior Mason Smith
was just outside the qualifying for the 60 meters. However, his finish
of 6.95 was a career best and matched the seventh-best time in Penn
history. Senior Allante Keels just missed out on the finals for the 400
meters as his time of 49.65 was two-hundreths of a second behind the
final qualifier.
The Quakers are in seventh place in the team standings
following the first day of competition with two points. Harvard is in
the lead after Day One with 32 points followed by Cornell's 31.
