Hoehn Cup – Day 2 Update

2013 Men's CSA Championships Brackets

NEW HAVEN, CONN. – The No. 12 Penn men’s squash team (5-11, 2-6 Ivy) defeated 16th-ranked Brown (8-11, 1-7) on Saturday morning, 7-2, in the Hoehn Cup consolation semifinals. The win was the Quakers’ second over the Bears this season – they now lead the all-time series 27-1 – and moves them on to the consolations final against No. 15 Bates (14-10, 7-3 NESCAC) on Sunday at 11:30 a.m. at the Choate Courts in Wallingford, Conn.

Against the Bears, the Quakers earned four straight-game victories from Liam Quinn (6-10, 2-6) at No. 3 over Eamon O’Connor, Jack Maine (8-8, 4-4) at the sixth position over Michael Snower, Tyler Odell (10-6, 5-3) at seven over Tod Holberton and Justin Ang (5-4, 4-2) at No. 8 against Charles Lebovitz.

Two of Penn’s other wins came in four games at positions two and four from Derek Chilvers (4-12, 2-6) and Augie Frank (4-12, 2-6), respectively. Michael Mutscheller (2-11, 1-4) earned his first Ivy League victory of the season in the longest match of the day at No. 5. The sophomore went up two games on Christopher Holter to start, but dropped the next two, forcing a fifth game – the Quaker won the long deciding game, 13-11.

Sunday’s matchup against the Bobcats will be the second meeting between the two teams this season as well. Penn and Bates met back on Nov. 11 on the first day of the season in Washington, D.C. – both matches this season will have been on neutral courts – and the Quakers won a tight one, 5-4. Chilvers, Frank, Daniel Judd (10-6, 5-3), Maine and Odell combined for Penn’s five victories on the day. The Red and Blue lead the all-time series, 5-0, with all five being played at neutral locations.
