PHILADELPHIA – For the third straight Saturday, the University of Pennsylvania women’s rowing program will host races on its home course on the Schuylkill River. This weekend, the Quakers are in action twice -- in the morning, Penn hosts Northeastern and Syracuse for the Orange Challenge Cup, while in the afternoon the Quakers host Bucknell.

If the latest rankings are any indication, fans should expect close races on Saturday morning. All three programs involved in the Orange Challenge Cup are among the crews receiving votes in this week’s CRCA coaches poll, Syracuse with 28 vote points, Penn with 21, Northeastern with two.

Penn is the two-time defending champion of the Orange Challenge Cup, winning the varsity 8 race each of the last two years after not winning that race since 1995. Last year, the Quakers won four of the six races contested including all three NCAA boats (first varsity 8, second varsity 8, varsity 4). The Orange Challenge Cup races have been contested every year since 1981, with the exception of 1994.

“I am excited to get out and race on Saturday,” said Penn’s head coach, Mike Lane. “Traditionally, this is one of the most competitive races of our season. All three teams are well coached and very evenly matched.

“We learned a few things from last weekend's races with Columbia and Yale, and Saturday will be a great day to see if we have fixed what we needed to.”

Saturday afternoon’s slate of races with Bucknell was put on the schedule to give the Penn women their first taste of championship racing; the morning-afternoon schedule format is similar to what they will see at the Ivy League Championships next month.

“Racing twice in one day is always a great teaching tool as we prepare for the Ivy Championships, where we have to race twice,” said Lane.
