PHILADELPHIA - In their Fall debut, the University of Pennsylvania lightweight rowers won three races at the Navy Day Regatta on the Schuylkill River Saturday.

The Quakers were first in the 23-boat novice 8+ race with a winning time of 12:07.98. That was a few seats in front of Navy and five seconds in front of a third-place Penn heavyweight boat. Penn was also victorious in the other novice race. Among the 10 boats, the Red and Blue had the top two boats in the 4+ race with a winning time of 13:22.96 and a runner-up finish of 13:40.91.

In Penn's victory in the lightweight 4+, the Quakers finished in a time of 13:09.27. The Red and Blue were the runaway winners by nearly a minute. Penn also finished third and fifth, respectively. The Quakers' second boat came across in 14:02.26 which was just a few seats from the runner-up spot. Penn's final group in the seven-boat race finished in 14:32.38.

The Quakers were runner-up in the varsity 8 race behind Navy. The Midshipmen were only tested by Penn en route to the finish. The Red and Blue were six seconds behind with a finish of 12:06.43.

In the open pairs, the Quakers finished third in 14:39.86.

Following the races, all three Penn rowing programs hosted parents for a dinner and tour of the new indoor training facility in the Hutchinson Gymnasium. The dinner took place in The Palestra.

Next weekend, the Quakers travel to Boston for the prestigious Head of the Charles on Sunday, Oct. 20.
