Ivy League Release

PHILADELPHIA  - The University of Pennsylvania men’s basketball team was picked to finish second in the Ivy League’s Preseason Media Poll, which came from the votes of two members of each school’s media contingent in addition to one national voter. The poll was announced during a media conference call with the Ancient Eight coaches, held earlier today.

Defending champion Harvard was a unanimous selection to win the title, garnering all 17 first-place votes and 136 points. Penn was second with 100 points, followed closely by Yale (96) and Princeton (93). Brown was picked fifth, with 74 points, followed by Cornell (38), Dartmouth (38) and Columbia (37).

Under the guidance of the John R. Rockwell Head Coach of Men’s Basketball, Jerome Allen, Penn returns all 15 players from a team that went 6-8 last year in Ivy League play, finishing sixth. In addition, the Quakers have added five newcomers to the roster for this season.

Penn opens the 2013-14 season on Saturday, Nov. 9 when the Quakers host Temple in the earliest Philadelphia Big 5 game, by date, in history. The Ivy League campaign will begin on Saturday, Jan. 11 when the Quakers host Princeton at The Palestra.
