PHILADELPHIA - The Ivy League has announced its inaugural weekly award winners in men's basketball for the 2013-14 season, and University of Pennsylvania sophomore guard Tony Hicks has been honored as co-Ivy League Player of the Week. He shares the honor with Yale's Justin Sears.
Hicks scored 28 points in Saturday's season-opening, 78-73 loss to Big 5 rival Temple, one shy of his career and the most by a Penn player in an opener since the 2001-02 season (when Ugonna Onyekwe scored 30 in a 79-74 win at Georgia Tech). Ten of Hicks' points were scored as Penn overcame a 15-point deficit, and eight of them came in a row as he singlehandedly turned a 71-65 deficit into a 73-71 lead.
Hicks was 12-of-24 from the field in the game, including a trio of three-pointers. He also had three assists, three steals and two rebounds.
Penn (0-1) is at Monmouth on Tuesday night at 7 p.m., then hosts Penn State Saturday at 2 p.m.
