PHILADELPHIA – Lorenzo Thomas returned to The Palestra and reminded the home crowd of the brilliance which earned Thomas 2012 Ivy League Rookie of the Year honors, winning four matches to claim the 184-pound championships at the 2013 Keystone Classic.

The top seed, Thomas won his first two matches by fall and added a major decision to reach the final, including a 13-2 major of Harvard’s Cameron Croy in the semifinals. In the championship match, Thomas scored a takedown in the third period to pull away from the second seed, Lucas Sheridan of Indiana, 5-2.

Joining Thomas in the final was sophomore Ray Bethea who went 4-1 at 157 pounds to claim second place. Seeded third, Bethea knocked off the No. 2 seed – and national No. 10 – Nestor Taffur of Boston University, 7-4 in the semifinals before suffering a loss by fall to No. 1 seed – and national No. 8 Taylor Walsh of Indiana in the title match. Bethea was not alone in his fall to Walsh – he pinned all five four of his opponents in the tournament.

A pair of freshmen took fourth place finishes in their first Keystone Classics in Caleb Richardson and Frank Mattiace. Each had a signature win in the tournament, Richardson dispatching of No. 2 seed Dominic Parisi of Appalachian State, 4-2, in the quarterfinals and then defeating No. 5 seed Joe Duca of Indiana in the consolation semis. Seeded seventh, Richardson’s two losses were to the No. 3 and No. 1 seed, including a 9-5 decision to No. 1 seed and national No. 7 Anthony Zannetta of Pittsburgh.

Mattaice wrestled from the No. 6 seed at 197 to a fourth place finish with a win over No. 3 seed – and national No. 17 Nick Bonaccorsi of Pitt along the way. That win was Mattiace’s second of the weekend over a Top-20 opponent. In the semis, Mattiace was knocked off by No. 2 seed and national No. 12 Daniel Mitchell of American, 5-2.

Steve Robertson took fifth place at 157, posting a 4-2 record with his only losses to the top two seeds. For fifth place, he defeated Harvard’s No. 5 seed Tyler Grimaldi, 10-7.

Casey Kent finished sixth after having to medically forfeit out. Before suffering an injury, he defeated No. 4 seed and national No. 18 Ryan LeBlanc of Indiana, 3-1, in sudden victory and was edged in the final moments by top seed and national No. 8 Josh Veltre of Bloomsburg, 3-2.

The Quakers will return to the mats Dec. 1 at Madison Square Garden at the Grapple in the Garden event. Penn will wrestle duals with Boston University (10 a.m.) and Bloomsburg (12 p.m.) in its first trip to MSG.
