Total Performance Day One: Men Swimming

GAMBIER, Ohio – At the conclusion of day one of the Total Performance Invitational hosted by Kenyon College, the University of Pennsylvania men swimming team was edged out by four points. Host Kenyon leads with 233 points, while Penn is right behind with 229.

Score aside, Penn broke the pool and meet records of both the events the men swam.

Starting the trend in the second event of the evening, first for the men, was sophomore Chris Swanson. Last year, Swanson also won the event with a time of 15:21.21 and broke the pool record. This year, he broke his own record with a time of 15:06.86 and finished 10.97 seconds ahead of second place Harrison Curley from Kenyon (15:17.83).

Finishing in the top ten for the Quakers were sophomore Bradley Wachenfeld (6th, 15:37.97), junior Eric Vanden Noort (7th, 15:39.37), and freshman Wes Thomas (8th, 15:453.25).

Second to break the pool and meet record was the 800 free relay “A” team – junior Dillon McHugh, sophomore Eric Schultz, freshman Kevin Su, and senior Rhoads Worster. The team finished at 6:32.64 and Johns Hopkins “A” finished next at 6:36.06. Two more “A” teams, Kenyon and DePauw, finished before the Penn “B” team – junior Sam Ruddy, junior Konner Scott, freshman Michael Hamann, freshman Michael Wen – at 6:42.60.

Action resumes tomorrow morning with preliminary races beginning at 9:30 a.m. Diving Sessions will begin at 1pm and tomorrow's championship and consolation finals will begin at 5:30 p.m.
