PHILADELPHIA -- The competition was tough for the University of Pennsylvania women's fencing team at the Philadelphia Invitational held in The Coach Dave Micahnik Fencing Center today. The Quakers, ranked No. 8 on the College Women's Fencing Coaches Poll, went 4-2 on the day, dropping duals to No. 7 Northwestern and No. 9 Temple. After the day's results, the Red and Blue now have an overall record of 9-3.

After defeating both Sacred Heart and UNC, 20-7, Penn faced Northwestern to close out the morning rounds.

Claiming the 5-4 win in Sabre was freshman Shriya Joshi, junior Laura Barger, and sophomore quad captain Tiffany Chan. With a second weapon victory, foilists junior quad captain Luona Wang, freshman Cassidy Seidl, and junior Sarah Parmacek added seven points to Penn’s overall score. Despite winning both Sabre and Foil, the Quakers couldn’t keep the Wildcats tamed in Epee, falling 8-1. With that loss, the Red and Blue dropped the dual by one point.

After the lunch break, Penn defeated two more teams.

The Quakers took on Lafayette in round four defeating the Leopards, 26-1, and had 9-0 victories in Epee and Sabre. The Red and Blue followed that win with another in round five against Duke, winning 19-8.

Four duals ended the day, one of them being Penn and Temple. The last time the two Big 5 rivals met was at the Penn State Invitational, when the Red and Blue took a 17-10 win. With the scores even after the bouts in Foil and Epee – the Owls took Foil 5-4 while the Quakers won Epee 5-4 -- Temple got their redemption and won Sabre, 7-2.

Penn will be back in action next weekend when the teams travel to Northwestern for the Northwestern Invitational.
