PHILADELPHIA – Freshman Anaka Alankamony was named the women’s Harrow’s Sports College Squash Player of the Week for the week ending on Feb. 2.
Alankamony helped lead the third-ranked Quakers to two crucial Ivy League victories over the past week, with Penn defeating No. 4 Princeton on Wednesday, 6-3, and No. 5 Yale, 5-4, on Saturday afternoon.
The first-year player defeated the Tigers’ Maria Elena Ubina, 3-1 (11-6,12-10,10-12,11-5) on Wednesday and won the deciding match against Yale’s Millie Tomlinson in five games (14-12, 11-13, 5-11, 11-9, 11-8) on Saturday.
The Harrow Sports College Squash Player of the Week is awarded to an individual that had a significant impact on his or her team’s performance during the prior week, and demonstrated sportsmanship.
The women’s team is 8-2 overall and 4-1 in Ivy play. Penn has two regular season matches remaining, both versus Ivy opponents, at Cornell , Friday, Feb. 7 and hosting Columbia, Sunday, Feb. 9.
